Cedilla
Cedilla

The ç cedilla is undoubtedly one of the most popular graphemes of the French language, this sign is marked under the “c” that is before an “a”, “o” and “u” in order to obtain the pronunciation “s”. The cedilla is not only a characteristic symbol of the French language, this grapheme has the power to change the meaning of a word with its absence or presence, this is where its enormous importance in the French language lies.

The cedilla has Spanish and Visigothic origins, it was discovered in 1492 in Spain, its symbol was imported from the Visigothic peoples due to the need to give shape to the sound “s” accompanied by a, o and u. In the year 1529 it finally arrived in France, where it found a monumental reception and became one of the graphemes that identified this language to the world. François I is the first person to integrate the cedilla into his name and also into the French dictionary. In France he found the reception that unfortunately he did not achieve in Spain, eliminating it from the Spanish spelling in the XNUMXth century. The letters are also a historical testimony, sometimes it is not enough to just write them but also know them.
